A two-photon polymerization (2PP) printer is an advanced additive-manufacturing system that uses a focused laser to cure a photosensitive resin. Unlike standard photopolymerization, 2PP relies on simultaneous absorption of two photons at the focal point, which confines polymerization to a tiny 3D volume. How it works (high level)
Typically, a femtosecond or picosecond laser is scanned through the resin using precise optics (e.g., galvanometer mirrors or a translation stage). When the laser intensity is high enough at the focal spot, the resin crosslinks only where the two-photon condition is met. The printer then builds structures layer-by-layer in 3D by moving the focus along programmed paths. After exposure, the sample is developed to remove uncured resin, leaving the final microstructure.

2PP printers are used for micro-optics, photonics, biomedical microstructures, microfluidic components, and intricate molds or scaffolds. Key considerations include resin choice (mechanical/biocompatibility/optical properties), achievable feature size (often sub-micron), writing speed, and post-processing.
